The Ironic Virtue of Kindness in Ministry

Kindness is a virtue that is often overlooked in those working or volunteering ministry together, kind of ironic, don’t you think?  We recently interviewed Greg Atkinson, author of the book, The Secret Power of Kindness, on the Church Solutions Podcast. He shared about how kindness is many times not common for those serving together in ministry. We are so focused on getting the job done, on reaching people for Christ, that we forget to be kind to the people we are serving with. But kindness is essential in ministry. It is a way of showing love to others, and it is a way of building relationships.

There are many reasons why kindness is important in ministry. First, kindness can help to create a positive and welcoming environment. When people feel welcome and appreciated, they are more likely to be open to what we have to say. Second, kindness can help to build relationships. When we are kind to others, we build trust and rapport. This makes it easier to work together and to achieve our goals. Third, kindness can be a powerful witness to the love of Christ. When we show kindness to others, we are reflecting the love of God. This can be a powerful way to reach people for Christ.

There are many ways to show kindness in ministry. We can be kind in our words, in our actions, and in our attitudes. We can be kind to those who are serving with us, to those who are being ministered to, and to those who are not yet believers.

Here are a few specific ways to show kindness in ministry with your co-workers and volunteers.

  • Be patient and understanding.
  • Be willing to listen.
  • Be supportive and encouraging.
  • Be forgiving.
  • Be generous with your time and resources.
  • Be a peacemaker.

Kindness is not always easy. It takes effort and it takes self-sacrifice. But it is worth it. Kindness is a powerful force for good in the world, and it is essential in ministry.

Here are some additional benefits of kindness for those involved in ministry:

  • It can help to reduce stress and conflict.
  • It can boost morale and productivity.
  • It can create a more positive and welcoming environment.
  • It can help to attract new people to the church.
  • It can be a powerful witness to the love of Christ.

If you are involved in ministry, I encourage you to make kindness a priority. It is a virtue that will make you a better minister and it will make the world a better place.
